Wisdom Births

What is a Doula?

The origins of doulas can be traced back to ancient Greece, where women supported each other during childbirth. The word “doula” comes from the Greek word “doulē,” which means “female servant.” These women provided emotional support, guidance, and comfort to the labouring woman, ensuring a safe and positive birth experience. The term “doula” was developed in the 1960s when women began desiring unmedicated, low-intervention births and began to have friends and others with formal or practical knowledge about childbirth provide them with support during pregnancy.

Doulas believe in enabling their clients to have the most satisfying and empowered time they can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new parent by ‘mothering the mother’. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience.

Studies show that by hiring a Doula, you are……..

28% less likely to have a caesarean section

31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin to speed labour

34% less likely to rate your childbirth experience negatively
